# GCSE Maths 9-1 Proportionality

At York Maths Tutor we are working through the new GCSE Maths 9-1 course explaining each of the different topics that appear and the types of questions you are likely to see in the exams. This week we are looking at proportionality which is an area of Maths which requires strong algebra skills as it is mostly about substitution and rearrangement. Proportionality is made up of direct proportion questions and inverse proportion questions which are often contextualised in the new GCSE Maths 9-1 questions. Usually Y and X are used but the questions could be mixed up or ask students to complete a reverse calculation. They may be put into a real life context such as gravitational field strength which is inversely proportional to the distance from Earth, or something like this. In order to see through the context students must do a number of things. Firstly, the four proportionality equations must be learned and then secondly practice of different types of questions is essential. We recommend that students and tutors look at Maths Made Easy for direct and inverse proportion questions and past paper practice relating to this topic.
